Assigned Readings:

  • Chapters 3-6: Loughran, J. (2006). Developing a Pedagogy of Teacher Education: Understanding Teaching and Learning About Teaching. London: Routledge.

  • Chapters 4-10: Svinicki, M., & McKeachie, W. J. (2014). McKeachie’s teaching tips: Strategies, research, and theory for college and university teachers (14th ed.). Belmont, CA: Wadsworth.

Essential Questions:

  • What are practices that I can use as a teacher educator to facilitate learning?

  • What is my philosophy as a teacher educator?

Reading Representation:

As I believe in learning that allows students to be engaged through active learning opportunities, Chapter 5 in McKeachie's Teaching Tips, discusses how teacher educators can facilitate discussions that influence this type of learning through allowing students to lead discussions, presenting controversial topics, utilizing the skills of students to influence instructional planning, etc. However, the strategy that resonated with me the most was the idea of asking students questions to help allow students to generate discussion. While most class discussions that I have with my students emerge from topical questions students about course text, I plan to enjoy the opportunity of using Kahoot! to help my students generate ideas through factual questions. Since students are assigned to read literature, as pre-work, I will seek to stimulate problem solving from key definitions and facts, which allows me to appropriately check student readiness for deep discussion of content (Svinicki & McKeachie, 2014).
